What is Office 365?

Meaning & Definition

Office 365

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, Office 365 was a suite of cloud-based productivity and collaboration tools and services offered by Microsoft. Please note that the product landscape may have changed since then, and Microsoft has rebranded Office 365 to Microsoft 365. I will provide information based on my last update:

Office 365 included a range of applications and services designed for both personal and business use.

Some of the key components of Office 365 include:

  • Microsoft Office Applications

Office 365 provided access to popular Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. These applications were available online (in web versions) as well as downloadable desktop versions.

  • Email and Calendar

Office 365 offered email hosting through Outlook, with features like email storage, calendar management, and integration with other Office applications.

  • OneDrive

OneDrive for Business allows users to store and share files in the cloud. It offered cloud-based file storage and synchronization across devices.

  • SharePoint Online

SharePoint Online allowed organizations to create, manage, and share documents and collaborate on projects using a web-based platform.

  • Microsoft Teams

Office 365 included Microsoft Teams, a collaboration platform for chat, video conferencing, file sharing, and team collaboration.

  • Yammer

Yammer was a social networking tool for businesses, allowing employees to connect and collaborate within the organization.

  • Exchange Online

This provides cloud-based email hosting and management services for organizations.

  • PowerApps and Power Automate

Tools that enable users to create custom apps and automate workflows to streamline business processes.

  • Planner

A tool for task and project management within teams.

  • Azure Active Directory

Office 365 used Azure Active Directory for identity and access management, allowing organizations to manage user identities and access to resources.

It’s important to note that the rebranding to Microsoft 365 involved an expansion of the service, offering additional features and services beyond what was available in Office 365. These may include enhanced security, artificial intelligence features, and more. Therefore, if you are looking for the most up-to-date information, I recommend visiting the Microsoft website or consulting their official documentation to learn about the latest offerings and features under the Microsoft 365 suite.
